Join the West Claremont Center for Music and the Arts (WCCMA) for two harp workshops on Thursdays April 10 and 24, 6:30-7:15p taught by harper Angela Biggs! No musical experience necessary, and you’ll learn everything you need to know to play harp in the Campfire Songs workshop with Maine harping/storytelling duo Castlebay on Saturday, April 26. Workshops are cumulative and there are only five harps available, so a firm commitment is required. Fee is by donation, suggested $5 per class; at the end of the first class, you’ll have the chance to rent your harp so that you can practice at home. To register contact [email protected], or call 603-558-8174.

Then on April 26th, Castlebay will present a program at 4p, followed by an al fresco meal (weather permitting) and a Campfire Songs workshop beginning at 6:30p. If the weather cooperates, we’ll even have s’mores!

The Campfire Songs workshop at 6:30p is open to all — singers, dancers, puppeteers, whistlers, drummers, etc. Workshops for those who would like to participate on harp will be held on Thursdays April 10 and 24, 6:30-7:15p. Workshops are cumulative. There are only five harps available, so if you’d like to reserve one, a firm commitment is required. To register, see contact info above. Suggested donation $5 per class; you’ll also have the chance to rent a harp after the first class, so that you can practice at home.

Castlebay has been musically weaving together the heritage of New England and the Celtic lands since 1987. Members Julia Lane and Fred Gosbee have loved and researched traditional music for most of their lives and blend history, legend and experience into their personable performance style. Their concerts feature poignant ballads sung in Lane’s ethereal soprano and Gosbee’s rich baritone interspersed with joyous dance tunes played on Celtic harp, guitar, fiddle and tin whistle. Castlebay treats the audience to a musical journey through time and across the Atlantic.

Castlebay has toured the Eastern U.S., Ireland, England and Scotland playing at festivals and arts centers, as well as on radio and television. The duo maintains a commitment to cultural education, exchanging music and lore with colleagues. They provide folklore and music programs for schools, museums, libraries and Elderhostels exploring Celtic lore and tradition throughout the eastern US and the British Isles. The duo has released 27 recordings including both original and traditional songs, Christmas harp recordings, and the “Tapestry” collection, a 6-part instrumental series.
