People m ake shrines to honor the deceased relatives featuring the person’s favorit e food and drink\, and gifts. This holiday is a joyful celebration of thos e who have passed instead of a day of mourning.
\nWe welcome you to join us for music and mask making with the Grammy-winning Villalobos broth ers who have captured the hearts of audiences around the world with their virtuosic musicianship\, infectious energy and profound messages of love\, brotherhood and social justice. You will learn more about the Day of the Dead and how to create traditional Mexican masks found at the celebration.
\nThis workshop is best suited for youth ages 7 and up\, but childr en 5 or younger can participate with adult assistance.
\nThis worksh op is free. Please make sure to wear clothes which can get dirty as we wil l be using paint and other materials which can damage clothing.

\nKarim Nagi is a true crossover artist uniting the Arab tradition with the global contemp orary world as an Egyptian immigrant in the USA. He has released fourteen albums\, ranging from traditional Arab music to fusion and electronica\, a nd has authored instructional videos for Arab percussive instruments and A rab dance styles. As a dance and drum teacher\, Nagi has taught in dozens of festivals in the United States\, Asia\, Europe and Cairo\, as well as m ost major Arab Culture festivals in the USA. Mamado u Diabate was born into a traditional musician family (S ambla people) in Burkina Faso (West Africa)\, with a long tradition of pra ctising the profession of story telling and music making. At the age of 5 he started his professional training with his father Penegue Diabate\, who in his days was considered the best balafon player far beyond the bordes of the sambla culture. At 8 he began with his apprenticeship years with re nowned balafonists of neighboring peoples. In 1988 and 1998 he won the fir st prize of the “National Culture Week” of Burkina Faso. He currently live s in Austria. With his group Percussion Mania he won the Austrian World Mu sic Award (2011) and the Grand Prix of the “Triangle du Balafon” Competiti on in Mali (2012). \nAshley Jablonski is a cartoonist and full time teac her. She received her Master of Fine Arts at the Center for Cartoon Studie s in 2022. She has also received a Bachelor’s in Sociology with minors in Art History and Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.\n
