Masterclass/workshop sessions with Boston musicians Peter Bloom (flute/saxophone) and Mary Jane Rupert (piano/harp). Participants are invited to sign up for a coaching slot and work one-on-one in a class setting with these outstanding musicians. Following the masterclass, an evening concert of music for Flute, Viola, and Harp will performed.

Advanced registration is required for participants, and suggested for auditors. Please contact [email protected]

Participants: recommended for intermediate to advanced players. Bring one piece to workshop with the instructors. The piece can still be a work in progress, but should be past the beginning stages of learning. Each participant will have a 20 minute time slot to work with the instructor. Bring your current skills and enthusiasm to learn! A suggested donation of $20 is recommended for participants, but we do not want this to be a barrier to participation. An accompanist may be available, please contact us with your piece name; an additional fee may apply.

Auditors: recommended donation of $10. Observe the participants at the workshop to pick up tips and tricks for your own playing or teaching. Those in attendance as moral support for a participant are free.

Ensemble Aubade

Flutist Peter H. Bloom and harpist Mary Jane Rupert, who tour the globe as the Duo “2”, are joined by noted violist Frank Grimes in Ensemble Aubade.  Known for stellar musicianship, vivid concerts and engaging commentary, Ensemble Aubade performs masterworks and rarely-heard treasures for flute, viola and harp by European and American composers.  Educational outreach includes master classes, lecture-demos, school concerts (elementary, middle school and high school), improvisation workshops, and other activities.

Flutist Peter H. Bloom, whose playing has been called “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength” (The Boston Globe), concertizes widely in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and Australia; is featured on 40 recordings (Sony Classical, Dorian, Leo Records, other labels); serves as historical performance consultant to Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and is a winner of the American Musicological Society’s Noah Greenberg Award.

Mary Jane Rupert, harp, praised by the New York Times as exhibiting “indeed real sensitivity,” has performed from Carnegie Recital Hall to the Beijing Concert Hall. She has appeared as concert pianist and harpist with chamber ensembles, choral groups and orchestras across the United States.  She serves on the faculties of Boston College and Tufts University and taught previously at Western Michigan University, MIT, and Wellesley College, where she taught harp for 20 years.

Violist Frank Grimes has performed with the Boston Pops, Boston Opera, Masterworks Chorale and other distinguished ensembles and regularly serves in the orchestras of the Colonial and Schubert Theatres. He has served on the faculties of Milton Academy, the All Newton Music School and the Community Music Center of Boston.  He attended Boston University’s School of Fine Arts and completed his BM at Indiana University as a student of William Primrose.
