\nMusician and composer Mamadou Diabaté shares his award-winning talents on the bala fon\, an instrument which resembles a xylophone with wooden sound bars tha t are reinforced with hollowed out gourds. Diabaté’s use of rhythm with th e balafon’s unique sound creates a captivating musical experience. His mus ic honors millennia-old West African culture and tells the stories of the Sambla people who live in 12 villages in Burkina Faso.

Dobet’s fifth album Musiki w as released in 2017 by the French label La Café. After years of touring\, Dobet maintains a strong work ethic\, confessing\, “When I’m not traveling \, I get a little depressed.”
\nIn 2010\, Dobet earned further renow n when her collaboration with American singer India.Arie on the song “Pear ls” earned them a GRAMMY win for Best Urban/Alternative Performance. That same year\, the UK’s Guardian newspaper crowned her with the “best perform ance” accolade at the prestigious WOMAD festival.
\nHer most recent album\, Couleur\, draws its energy from the creative fire and passion that Dobet brings to all her work. The band\, renowned for their captivating performances and powe rful celebration of Garifuna culture\, has performed on major festival sta ges around the world\, and their upcoming tour includes stops in notably s maller communities across New England including with the West Claremont Ce nter for Music and the Arts in Claremont\, NH. Audiences can expect an enc hanting journey through Garifuna traditions as the Collective presents the ir unique sound that spans traditional songs\, modern compositions\, and v ibrant reinterpretations of classic Garifuna melodies.
\nHailing fro m the Caribbean coast of Central America\, the Garifuna people are descend ants of West African\, Indigenous Arawak\, and Carib peoples\, with a rich history of resilience\, cultural preservation\, and musical expression.Th e Garifuna language was designated by UNESCO as a “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in 2001.
\nIn addition to the inspiring performances\, the Garifuna Collective’s tour will offer educati onal workshops and various opportunities for cultural exchange\, fostering a deeper understanding of the Garifuna people\, their heritage\, and thei r ongoing contributions to the world of music. An advocate for new music\, several concertos were dedicated to him by composers such as Kareem Roustom\, Dia Succari\, Dinuk Wijeratne\, Zai d Jabri\, Saad Haddad and Guss Janssen\, in addition to a large number of chamber music works.
\nIn addition to his own Arab-Jazz Quartet City Band and his Hewar trio\, he has also been playing with the Silkroad Ensem ble since 2012\, whose 2017 Grammy Award-winning album “Sing Me Home” feat ures Kinan as a clarinetist and composer.
\nKinan Azmeh is a graduat e of New York’s Juilliard School as a student of Charles Neidich\, and of both the Damascus High institute of Music where he studied with Shukry Sah wki\, Nicolay Viovanof and Anatoly Moratof\, and Damascus University’s Sch ool of Electrical Engineering. Kinan earned his doctorate degree in music from the City University of New York in 2013.
\nHis first opera “Son gs for Days to Come” which is fully sung in Arabic\, was recently premiere d in Osnabruck\, Germany in June 2022 to a great acclaim. He has recently been appointed to the National Council for the Arts on a nomination by Pre sident Joe Biden.
\nAbout Dinuk Wijeratne
\nSri Lankan-born Canadian Dinuk Wijeratne is a JUNO and multi-awar d-winning composer\, conductor\, and pianist who has been described by the New York Times as ‘exuberantly creative’\, by the Toronto Star as ‘an art ist who reflects a positive vision of our cultural future’\, and by the Ma nitoba Chamber Orchestra as ‘a modern polymath’. His boundary-crossing wor k sees him equally at home in collaborations with symphony orchestras and string quartets\, tabla players and DJs\, and takes him to international v enues as poles apart as the Berlin Philharmonie and the North Sea Jazz Fes tival.
\nDinuk was featured as a main character in ‘What would B eethoven do?’ – the 2016 documentary about innovation in classical mu sic featuring Eric Whitacre\, Bobby McFerrin and Ben Zander. Forthcoming p rojects include new works for Grammy-winning baritone Elliot Madore (featu ring Dinuk as pianist) and Grammy-nominated mandolinist Avi Avital\, the t est piece for the Banff International String Quartet Competition 2022\, an d conducting debuts with the Calgary Philharmonic and Qatar Philharmonic\, Doha.
\nDinuk made his Carnegie Hall debut while still a student in 2004 as a composer\, conductor\, and pianist performing with Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble. A second Carnegie appearance followed in 2009\, a longside tabla legend Zakir Hussain. Dinuk has also appeared at the Boulez Saal (Berlin)\, Kennedy Center (Washington DC)\, Opéra Bastille (Paris)\, Lincoln Center (New York)\, Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires)\, Sri Lanka\, Japa n\, and across the Middle East. Dinuk grew up in Dubai before taking up co mposition studies at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM)\, Manchest er\, UK. In 2001\, he was invited by Oscar-winning composer John Coriglian o to join his studio at New York’s Juilliard School. Conducting studies fo llowed at New York’s Mannes College of Music\, and doctoral studies under Christos Hatzis at the University of Toronto.

\nWe welcome you to join us for music and mask making with t he Grammy-winning Villalobos brothers who have captured the hearts of audi ences around the world with their virtuosic musicianship\, infectious ener gy and profound messages of love\, brotherhood and social justice. You wil l learn more about the Day of the Dead and how to create traditional Mexic an masks found at the celebration.
