\nMusic’s an al most alchemical force to Canadian Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer Morga n Toney. From the first time he really heard music\, sit ting on the floor of his uncle’s house transfixed by a DVD of Phil Collins \, to 2022 where he’s one of the most in-demand young fiddlers and singers in Atlantic Canada\, was nominated for three East Coast Canadian Music Aw ards\, and his debut album\, First Flight\, is being reis sued by Indigenous record label Ishkode Records. In just a short amount of time\, Toney’s been able to invigorate both the Atlantic music communities and Mi’kmaq communities by bringing togeth er the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island with the old songs of the Mi’k maq\, one song dating back up to 500 years. He calls this fusion Mi’km altic (Mi’kmaq + Celtic) and it’s his way of celebrating his language and heritage. He’s honoring the elders who’ve taught him the songs and th e language\, and he’s taking his place on the front lines of Eastern Canad a’s cultural divide.

\nAbout th e Newmont Military Band
\nThe Newmont Military Band was formed 1995 to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Rachel Harlow United Method ist Church\, Windsor\, Vt. Our original instrumentation followed that of t he many cornet bands in existence in the late 1890s Several years later Ne wmont incorporated woodwind instruments\, so following the conventions of the late 19th century\, we became a “Military” band . Most of the brass in struments played by the musicians in the NMB were manufactured during the 19th century\, only a few are more modern but follow designs of that era. Our music was borrowed from the archives of the American Band of Claremont \, New Hampshire\, The Library of Congress\, The Chatfield\, Mn Lending Li brary\, The Band Music PDF Library\, arrangements by some our own band mem bers\, and individual donations from our band members based on archival re search. As it is authentic or reproduced late 19th century music\, it is s cored differently than music played by modern bands and we hope you agree it has a different overall sound.
\nOur program is representative of the music played on the town green in the late 19th century. There are so ngs of the war Civil War)\, love songs\, marches (including Sousa’s!)\, da nces\, and songs from the old folks. Many of our musical selections are ch osen from American Band and Windsor Military Band programs documented in t he Claremont Advocate and the Vermont Journal between the years of 1890 an d 1905. These concerts included music composed by New Englanders\, and som etimes the composer himself would conduct (E.E. Bagley\, C. L. Brigham).Th e Newmont Military Band has performed at the Shelburne Museum in Shelburne \, Vermont\, Windsor (Vt.) Heritage Days\, the Franklin Pierce Homestead i n Hillsborough NH\, The Gettysburg\, Pa. Band Festival several times\, The Lutheran Seminary at Gettysburg\, and numerous other historic venues..
\nThe members of the band come from Vermont\, New Hampshire\, and Mass achusetts. They are your neighbors and friends\, and are from all walks of life.

Bynum has worked with other legendary figures such as Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor and currently enjoys playing with friends in collective ensem bles like his duo with Tomas Fujiwara\, Illegal Crowns (with Fujiwara\, Be noit Delbecq\, and Mary Halvorson)\, and Geometry (with Kyoko Kitamura\, T omeka Reid\, and Joe Morris)\, and as a sideperson in groups led by Fujiwa ra\, Reid\, Jim Hobbs\, Bill Lowe\, Bill Cole\, and William Parker\, among others. \nTHB/TF Duo
\nOver the past thirty years\, over twenty-five albums and hundreds of gigs in dozens of different bands\, drummer Tomas Fujiwara and cornett ist Taylor Ho Bynum have developed one of the deeper levels of creative co mmunication in the contemporary music scene – in groups under Fujiwara’s l eadership like Triple Double and Shizuko\, ensembles led by Bynum includin g his Sextet\, 9-tette\, and PlusTet big band\, and collective projects li ke Illegal Crowns (with Mary Halvorson and Benoit Delbecq) and the Thirtee nth Assembly (with Halvorson and Jessica Pavone). \nDescribed as “a ubiquitous presence in the New York sce ne…an artist whose urbane writing is equal to his impressively nuanced dru mming\,” (Point of Departure) Brooklyn-based Tomas Fujiwara is an active p layer in some of the most exciting music of the current generation. He lea ds the bands Triple Double\, 7 Poets Trio\, and Tomas Fujiwara & The Hook Up\; is a member of the collective trio Thumbscrew (with Mary Halvorson an d Michael Formanek)\; has a collaborative duo with Taylor Ho Bynum\; and e ngages in a diversity of creative work with Anthony Braxton\, John Zorn\, Mary Halvorson\, Tomeka Reid\, Matana Roberts\, Taylor Ho Bynum\, Nicole M itchell\, Ben Goldberg\, Amir ElSaffar\, Benoit Delbecq\, and many others. His style is forward-driv ing but rarely blunt or aggressive\, and never random. He has a way of spr eading out the center of a pulse while setting up a rigorous scaffolding o f restraint…A conception of the drum set as a full-canvas instrument\, alm ost orchestral in its scope.” (New York Times)
