The NYC based band of well-travelled musicians stop in Claremont on April 19th at 6:30pm at WCCMA’s main performance space at Union Episcopal Church. Hailed as a “Virtuoso” and “Intensely Soulful” by the New York Times, “Spellbinding” by the New Yorker, and “Incredibly Rich Sound” by the CBC, Kinan Azmeh is one of Syria’s rising stars. His utterly distinctive sound across different musical genres has gained wide-spread international recognition. Kinan has appeared worldwide as a soloist, composer and improviser. He is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and won a Grammy this year as a performer and artist on their recent album “Sing Me Home.” Kinan was featured in the recent documentary “The Music of Strangers” directed by Academy Award-winner Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom), that was released in June 2016. He has performed with some of the great musicians of our time and in many of the most famous venues in the world.

Formed in 2006 in New York City, the Kinan Azmeh CityBand immediately gained recognition for their virtuosic and high energy performance, receiving praise from critics and audiences alike. With this New York ensemble, Azmeh strives to reach a balance between classical music, jazz, and the music of his homeland, Syria. Azmeh’s expressive clarinet meets Kyle Sanna’s rustic guitar, soaring at times over the dynamic and volatile backdrop of John Hadfield’s percussion and Josh Myers’ double bass. Each band member has come from varied backgrounds to add their personal flair to this ensemble, resulting in a thoroughly exciting and rewarding listening experience. The quartet has toured the US, France, England, Germany, Holland, Egypt, Lebanon, and Turkey.
